Art Brings Communities to Life
Art Is All Around US
Art is everywhere we turn, in the murals that brighten our streets, the architecture that gives our neighborhoods character, and the public spaces where we gather. Sometimes, we simply need a reminder to slow down and recognize how much it adds to our lives.
An Inspiring Conversation in Lincoln
On October 22, we attended the Fireside Chat with the National Endowment for the Arts at the Sheldon Museum of Art in Lincoln. Chairman Carter, Congressman Mike Flood, and Nebraska Arts Council Executive Director Mike Markey discussed the arts in Nebraska and federal funding opportunities. We left feeling inspired by the conversation and reminded of the powerful role art plays in communities of every size.
Small Towns, Big Cities, Lasting Impact
From small rural towns to larger cities, art helps communities thrive. A mural can tell a story about a town’s history. An exhibition can introduce us to a different perspective. A workshop can bring neighbors together and give someone the confidence to try something new. Programs that connect art with wellness can create space for expression, reflection, and connection.
Building Connection Through Creativity
These experiences help make a community feel alive. They give us opportunities to share our stories, celebrate our cultures, and build a sense of belonging. They also remind us that creativity deserves a place in our everyday lives.
Experiencing Art at the Sheldon
During our visit, we had the opportunity to explore three of the museum’s current exhibitions. Taking time to experience the artwork added another meaningful layer to the day—a chance to appreciate the creativity we had gathered to discuss.
Bringing Inspiration Home to Columbus
We returned to Columbus with renewed appreciation for the artists, organizations, volunteers, and supporters who make arts experiences possible. At the Columbus Art Gallery, we see the value of this work in a student discovering a favorite piece, a visitor connecting with an artist’s story, or friends coming together to enjoy an exhibition.
Simple Ways to Support Local Art
As we look around our own community, let’s take time to notice the beauty that surrounds us and the people and investments behind it. Visit a gallery, attend a workshop, pause at a sculpture, or share the work of a local artist. Each of these actions helps keep creativity present and valued.
Supporting the arts means supporting the life and future of our communities. Together, we can help Columbus continue to be a place where art, ideas, and people flourish.
