Turning Broken into Beautiful: A Community Jewelry Making Workshop

Last Updated 11/17/2025

A Collaboration Rooted in Support and Creativity

On Saturday, November 15, the Community Room of the Columbus Community Building became a gathering place for reflection, creativity, and community healing. Hosted by the Center for Survivors, Columbus Public Library, and the Trax Creative District, the workshop invited participants to transform broken jewelry into meaningful, new pieces -- a symbolic and hands-on reminder of resilience.

Finding Beauty in the Broken

As participants sorted through trays of beads, charms and old pieces waiting to be reimagined, facilitator Amber Keyes shared a powerful message that set the tone for the afternoon:

"Being broken does not mean you are less valuable. In fact, the cracks in your soul are often where your light shines the brightest."

Her words resonated throughout the room, creating a sense of connection that went far beyond the jewelry-making process. Each creation became a reminder that beauty can emerge from life's fractured pieces.

Creativity, Conversation, and Connection

The room buzzed with gentle conversations as participants learned new techniques or hones their existing skills. Some restrung necklaces, others redesigned earrings or pieced together bracelets, key chains or bookmarks. Each project as unique as the person creating it.

What truly made the afternoon special was the sense of togetherness: laughter shared over design choices, encouragement exchanged between tables, and quiet moments of reflection as hands worked with intention.

It wasn't just a class, it was a space to slow down, connect, and rediscover creativity.

More Than a Workshop

By the end of the session, everyone left with a couple of handcrafted pieces of jewelry, but also with something even more meaningful: community, encouragement and a renewed sense of personal expression.

The partnership between the Center for Survivors, Columbus Public Library and the Trax Creative District continues to open doors for programming that uplifts and empowers. This workshop was a beautiful example of how creativity can bring healing and how broken pieces can shine brighter than ever.
