Where Silence Speaks: Spaces Between Words

Rooted in Words and Art

Cheryl Dyer is a visual artist, calligrapher, and poet based in Omaha, Nebraska, with roots in southeast Iowa. She earned her BA in Communication with a minor in Visual Art from Iowa State University and recently completed her MFA in Creative Writing at University of Nebraska Omaha. Her visual artwork has been exhibited nationally and featured in Letter Arts Review, while her poetry has appeared in several literary journals, earning her two runner-up recognitions for the Helen Kennefick Poetry Prize. Cheryl also teaches poetry and calligraphy classes and works professionally as a lettering artist.

The Language of Silence

In her featured exhibit, Cheryl explores the powerful language of what isn’t spoken. Through poetry and calligraphic imagery, she reflects on non-verbal communication, the direction of a gaze, a pause, a touch, or even silence itself. Using pressure printing (a low-relief collagraph technique), she enlarges the negative shapes that fall away from hand-cut lettering, turning them into visual metaphors for the unseen emotions and meanings that exist between people.

Spaces Between Words

The exhibit also includes a limited-edition chapbook, On the Passage of Time, conceptualized and handcrafted by Cheryl. This collection pairs six original calligraphed poems with corresponding pressure-printed artworks, designed to be displayed on a wall or kept in a handmade folder. Featuring lettering fragments and a sun moving across a horizon, these pieces reflect on time, memory, and connection, reminding us that the quiet spaces between words often carry the deepest meaning.

Come experience Cheryl Dyer’s thoughtful and visually striking work, where poetry, calligraphy, and quiet moments meet in beautiful harmony.

Come and enjoy Spaces Between Words show.

The exhibit will be showing in the Columbus Art Gallery from March 5 - 30. The gallery is located in the Columbus Community Building, 2500 14 St., on the second floor
