Happy Coincidences: Stories Shared Across Time and Canvas

Last Updated 5/23/2025

Universe Lines Things Up

Sometimes, the universe lines things up in the most unexpected (and wonderful) ways—and starting June 1 in Columbus, we’re getting a perfect example of that.

On Sunday, June 1, at 2 p.m., the Columbus Public Library will welcome Jerome Kills Small to the community room of the Columbus Community Building (2500 14th St.). A gifted storyteller and respected educator, Jerome will share a treasure trove of children’s stories and animal tales rooted in Lakota and Dakota Sioux traditions. These stories—ranging from iktomi (trickster tales) to ohunkanka (old legends)—have been passed down through generations. The performance is free and open to all ages, thanks to Humanities Nebraska, and no registration is needed.

Telling Stories Exhibit

Just a few days later, on Tuesday, June 3, from 5–7 p.m., the Trax Creative District invites you to the opening reception of its latest gallery show—“Telling Stories,” featuring local artist Jim Davis, in the second-floor gallery of the same building.

Since retiring from the Columbus Fire Department, Jim has dedicated himself to his art, producing a small oil painting each day as part of a personal challenge. This exhibit offers a look into two narratives: one that highlights Columbus' story through familiar buildings and landscapes, and another that explores Jim’s personal journey as a visual artist. His work in both watercolor and oil paints brings these stories to life in vivid detail.

His exhibit will run through June 27. The gallery is open Monday - Thursday from 1 - 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 1-4 pm.

That's Not All!!!!

As part of the Telling Stories series, the Trax Creative District will also host live performances and artist talks from a dynamic lineup including Hector Anchondo, Aly Peeler, Edem Garro, and Jake Riley. Each artist brings a unique voice and creative lens to the theme of storytelling. You won’t want to miss these powerful events.

Multiple Events. One Building. Countless Stories

What started as two separate programs—one by the Library, one by the Creative District—has now become a beautiful month long celebration of storytelling in all its forms. Whether it’s spoken, sung, or painted, there’s something truly special about the way our community continues to come together around the arts.
