Artist Profile: Nelson Labrada
Where the Story Begins
Born in the coastal city of Gibara, Cuba, Nelson Labrada carries with him a world of color and memory. Now a proud resident of Columbus, he transforms those memories into watercolor and acrylic works that echo the boats, fishermen, and lively streets of his homeland. Scenes that continue to inspire his creative journey.
Memories Painted in Color
Every one of Nelson's paintings is rooted in personal history. His brush and often his palette knife capture moments that blend the warmth of Cuba with the openness of Nebraska. His artwork becomes a crossroads where two worlds meet, allowing viewers to step into the emotional landscapes that shaped his life.
From Local Roots to Global Stages
Though he creates right here in Columbus, Nelson's work is celebrated worldwide. In just the past year, his pieces have been featured in:
- May -- Thomson Gallery in Zug Switzerland
- July -- Palma, Spain
- August -- Zurich, Switzerland
- September -- Nicoleta Gallery in Berlin, German
- October -- Paris, France
- December -- Miami, Florida
His exhibition My World has been met with overwhelming praise. Visitors describe a sense of being transported -- drawn into Nelson's memories and moments through color, texture and emotion.
The Art of Touch and Texture
Nelson's signature style often relies on the bold use of a palette knife to apply thick, intentional layers of paint. This impasto technique leaves textured ridges on the surface, capturing the extra movements of his hands. From afar, his colors appear earthy and warm; up close, they reveal themselves as complex blends of greens, reds, purples, and blues. Each painting invites viewers to look closer -- to discover more.
A World-Class Artist at Home in Columbus
Despite his global exhibitions, Columbus is where Nelson creates, connects, and contributes to the local arts community. This year, he is also one of the featured artists in the Winter Market at the Columbus Art Gallery, giving residents the chance to experience his work up close.
