Turning Broken into Beautiful: The Art of Jolene Jankowski

Finding Beauty in Brokenness

For Jolene Jankowski of Broken Glass Creations, art is both a process of creation and a reflection of healing. Using broken glass from bowls, vases, plates and other discarded pieces, she transforms what was once shattered into something radiant and new. Her work and her message center around one powerful idea: turning broken into beautiful.

"My business is all about turning broken into beautiful. That means in life and in art," Jolene explains. "We are surrounded with broken things - the scary world we are currently living in, broken relationships, pain, fear and loss. It's about taking all of the broken pieces of life and putting them back together in a beautiful way."

Inspiration from the Farm

Much of Jolene's inspiration comes from her childhood memories on her grandparents' farm, a place that represented peace, love, and the simple joys of life.

"I chose the farm scene because of the peace, tranquility, and simple life I found at my grandparent's house when growing up," she shares. "Sitting under their huge tree in the front yard, listening to the farm sounds, hearing the birds sing and being surrounded by God's peace and beauty. I felt safe and loved."

That same spirit of serenity and gratitude flows through her artwork. Whether it's a pastoral scene or a mosaic inspired by everyday life, Jolene captures the feeling of finding wholeness in imperfection. Even her whimsical depictions of chickens draw from those early farm days - moments of lighthearted observation that became metaphors for freedom, friendship and joy.

Sharing Her Craft

Based in Elkhorn, Nebraska, Jolene also finds fulfillment in teaching others how to work with glass. Through her classes, she helps participants experience the same transformation she finds in her art. Turning fragments into forms of expression, resilience and hope.

On Exhibit Now

Jolene's work is currently featured in Unbroken: The Art of Survival, an exhibit highlighting artists who explore resilience through creativity. You can view her pieces in the Idea Box on the main floor of the Columbus Community Building, 2500 14 St.

Additional artwork can be seen in the Columbus Art Gallery located up on the second floor. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday from 1-5 p.m. and Saturday from 1-4 p.m. The exhibit runs through Thanksgiving.
