Seeing Through the Lens

For artist Chanda Baker, photography is more than a medium, it's a way of seeing. "Photography allows me to capture the beauty of the natural world as it is," she shares. The practice has transformed how she experiences life, inviting her to slow down and become more present. Through her lens, Baker observes the delicate play of light, texture, and movement, preserving not just images but the emotions tied to each captured moment.

Her travels deepen this connection, allowing her to explore diverse landscapes and cultures. Each photograph becomes part of a broader visual narrative. One that reflects her curiosity, wonder and appreciation for the world's many forms of beauty.

Shaping with Clay

In contrast to the stillness of photography, Baker's ceramic work offers a more tactile form of expression. "While photography captures, pottery creates," she explains. Through clay, she transforms ideas into tangible forms experimenting with texture, glaze, and shape until each piece feels alive. Her focus on functional art emphasizes the beauty of everyday life, crafting objects that bring both joy and reflection to daily rituals.

The Balance of Art and Life

Together, photography and ceramics form two halves of Baker's artistic identity. One captures what already exists; the other builds something new. Both serve as meditations on mindfulness, beauty and connection reminding us that art can help us see, touch, and appreciate the world in new ways. Through her dual practices, Baker continues her pursuit of finding meaning and grace in the ordinary.

Baker's work is currently on display as part of Unbroken: The Art of Survival, now showing in the Columbus Art Gallery on the second floor of the Columbus Community Building, 2500 14th Street.
