What to Expect and How to Enjoy It

Walking into an art gallery for the first time can feel a little intimidating. Maybe you're not sure what to wear, how to act, or what you're "supposed" to say when looking at the artwork. The good news is: you don't need to be an expert to enjoy art. Galleries are meant for everyone and your perspective is valuable. Here are some simple tips to help you feel confident and comfortable at an art event.

Com As You Are

Unless the invitation says otherwise, most gallery events are casual to semi-dressy. You don't need a fancy outfit. Just wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. The focus is on the art, not on what you're wearing.

Looking at Art

You don't have to know art history or use fancy words to appreciate a piece. Simple look at it. Notice colors, shapes, textures and how it makes you feel. There's no right or wrong reaction. If you don't "get it" that's okay too. Sometimes art is about sparking curiosity more than giving answers.

Talking to Artists

If the artist is there, they'll often be happy to chat. You don't need to come up with something profound. A simple question like "What inspired this piece?" or a comment like "I really like the colors you used" can start a great conversation.

Gallery Etiquette

A few basics will help you fit right in:

  • Don't touch the artwork unless it's clearly interactive.
  • Be mindful of your space. Don't stand to close or block others' view.
  • Ask before taking photos (every gallery has its own rules).
  • Food and drinks are usually fine if offered, just keep them away from the art.

Supporting the Event

Even if buying artwork isn't in your budget, you can still support the artists and the gallery. Sign the guestbook, share the event on social media, or bring a friend next time. Small actions help build a stronger arts community.

Most of All, Relax

Remember there's no test at the end of the day. You're there to enjoy yourself, see something new and connect with your community. Art is for everyone, and the fact that you showed up makes you part of the story.

So the next time you see a gallery opening or art event, take the leap. Walk in, look around, and let yourself experience it. Who knows you might discover a new favorite artist, meet a new friend, or even find yourself inspired to create something of your own.

And remember the Columbus Art Gallery offers a variety of exhibits throughout the year. The gallery is located on the second floor of the Columbus Community Building, 2500 14 St., and is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday - Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.
