Living Corridor

     Created in partnership with Leadership Columbus Class 34 and members of the Columbus community, the mural transforms an downtown space into a colorful reminder of the natural world that surrounds us and of our shared responsibility to care for it. 

     The inspiration for Living Corridor grew from Kim Darling's years of listening to wildlife stories shared by people across Nebraska. Those conversations helped shape a work that explores the relationships between people, wildlife, land and community.

     Set within a landscape of concrete, rail lines and industry, the mural brings the colors and movement of the prairie into the heart of Columbus. Its imagery reflects the extraordinary biodiversity of the Great Plains while recognizing the pathways that connect birds, wildlife, rivers, land and people.

     As the light changes throughout the day, so does the experience of the mural -- creating a vibrant place that feels alive with movement and possibility.

     An important part of Living Corridor is not simple what was painted but how it was created.

     Community members were invited to take part in the painting process, putting their own hands and creativity into a piece of public art that will remain part of Columbus for years to come. Volunteers, community painters, businesses, organizations and donors all played a role in bringing the project to life.

     That collaborative process reflects one of the central ideas behind the mural: caring for our environment and caring for one another are deeply connected.

     The completed mural belongs not only to the artist or the organizations that helped make it possible, but to the community that helped create it.

     Living Corridor also asks viewers to think more deeply about the history of the Nebraska landscape. The work acknowledges the intertwined stories of Indigenous stewardship, rural labor, land use, predator eradication, community identity and the changes that have shaped the Great Plains over generations.

     Rather thank providing a simple answer, the mural invites conversation. What does restoration look like? How can communities and ecosystems thrive together? And what role can each of us play in caring for the places we call home?

     A project of this scale truly takes a community.
