Business Spotlight: McKown Funeral Home - A Century of Compassionate Service
A Legacy that Began in 1925
Located in downtown Columbus, McKown Funeral Home has been a pillar of the community for 100 years. Founded in 1925 by James H. McKown and his wife Emma, the funeral home began with a commitment to providing thoughtful, respectful care to families during their most difficult moments. That legacy of compassion and service continues today under the ownership of Gregg Ridgeway and Brad Eickhoff, alongside licensed funeral directors and embalmers Chase Cherry and Parker Ridgeway.
After its founding, the business moved to its current location at 2922 13 Street in 1929. Though briefly closed following James' passing in 1939, Emma McKown courageously kept the business going to support her family. In 1949, two of the McKown sons, Joe and Jim, reopened the funeral home and helped it grow once again. Over the decades, the business expanded, added a chapel and grew to serve the wider region with the addition of a location in Silver Creek and the acquisition of McKown-Rice Funeral Home in Genoa in 2018.
